Mendota FFA Chapter members Marie Barnickel (Sr.) and Owen Wixom (Sr.) competed in the District 2 Proficiency Interviews hosted at Joliet Junior College's Weitendorf Agriculture Education Center on Wednesday, March 7, 2018.
Proficiency interviews allow FFA members to showcase their Supervised Agricultural Experience (SAE) programs while also developing valuable inteviewing skills at the same time. SAE's, which are a student work experience focused in agriculture conducted outside of the classroom setting, are an integral part of th three circle model of Agricultural Education programs with the other two components being classroom/lab instruction and participation in the National FFA Organization.
The Illinois Association FFA currently recognizes 50 differenct Proficiency Areas a complete listing of these can be found at Both Barnickel and Wixom were the Section 7 FFA winners, selected in February, who advanced to District level competition.
Barnickel, the daughter of Gale & Christina Barnickel of Compton, IL, competed in the area of Turf Grass Managment for her Lawn Care Service SAE. Wixom, the son of Mark & Juli Wixom of Mendota, IL, competed in the area of Agriculture Mechanics Repair & Maintenance - Placement for his SAE which involved working for Holland & Sons (Mendota, IL) in the Parts Department and Schmidt's Repair (Troy Grove, IL). Wixom was named the District 2 Winner in his Proficiency Area will compete at State Proficiency Interviews on Saturday, March 24, 2018 at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. He will compete against the four other District winners for the chance to be recognized as a State Proficiency winnner on stage at the 90th Illinois FFA State Convention June 12-14, 2018 at the BOS Center in Springfield, IL.
