The Mendota High School Chapter of the National Honor Society inducted 13 students into full membership of the Spanish Honor Society on ThursdayFebruary 15 at Mendota High School. President Ben Bokus conducted the ceremony, assisted by Vice President Iris Espinoza and Secretary Kevin Cuevas. Bokus spoke to the initiates and audience about the requirements and the mission of the AATSP. Iris Espinoza spoke about the importance of the Spanish language. The initiates received a yellow carnation and certificate as symbol of the Spanish Honor Society. Those inducted were Class of 2018 members Rutilio Arteaga and Haley Fittanto. Class of 2019 members inducted included Myah Boelk, Melyna Covarrubias, Ilian Hernandez, Preston Lewis, Melissa Minder, Eduardo Perez, Abby Phalen, Leslie Rivera, Eduardo Sandoval, Juliana Sarabia, and Gillian Sondgeroth. To qualify for the Spanish Honor Society at Mendota High School, a student must have a cumulative grade point average of 3.4 on a 4.0 scale in at least five semesters of Spanish. Then they must fill out an application in which they write three paragraphs one in Spanish and the other two in English about the importance of the Spanish Language and their personal experience in the classroom. The new members and families are then notified of the selection. Students’ names are on file at the offices of American Association of Teachers of Spanish and Portuguese (AATSP) as well as in the school’s file.
