Madrigal group

For the second year, Mendota High School’s madrigal singers have taken it upon themselves to raise money for a charitable cause. The group of 15 talented vocalists scheduled various performances at local churches during the past couple months and also did some caroling within the community to raise money for the Washington Tornado Relief Fund. In addition, they received money from secondary donations during performances at the Mendota Area Senior Services Christmas Dinner and St. John’s Lutheran Church in Mendota bringing the total amount raised to $935.

MHS choral director Lori Schrock said she has been very impressed by her students’ philanthropic service. Last year, the madrigal singers raised over $1,000 to donate to the Red Cross on behalf of the Super Storm Sandy victims. This year, however, tragedy struck much closer to home when a tornado system ravaged parts of central Illinois last November.

“This unfortunate weather event happened just weeks before our madrigal dinners,” Schrock explained. “I have a brother who lives in Washington with his wife and three daughters, who are in the Washington school system. Thankfully, they did not lose their home but they know many people who did.”

Schrock said money donated to the madrigal singers for community performances could have been used for a party or some type of group outing. “But they decided to pay it forward,” she said. “What a great group of human beings!”
